An anotomically complex, synovial joint in the upper part of the cervical spine between the 1st (Atlas/C1) and 2nd (Axis/C2) vertebrae.  It is a pivot joint that allows the head to rotate/pivot and consists of the median and lateral altantoaxial joints.
