Growths within the skull that occupies space and displaces or compresses normal tissue.  The most common cause for space-occupying lesions are brain tumors (primary or mestastic).  Other causes include brain aneurysms, abscesses, neoplasm, hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, granuloma, etc.  The effect tends to be more significant if the lesion is within a space confined by bone.
