A procedure that involves the injection of a small amount of one’s own blood into the epidural space around (not in) the spinal canal in order to close a hole (or holes) in the dura of the spinal cord. As the blood clots, it forms a patch/seal in the area of the hole (or holes), and thus, stops the leaking of cerebrospinal fluid.  The holes in the dura are usually caused by a prior lumbar puncture (spinal tap), but can also arise as the result of trauma, surgery, chiropractic manipulations, bony abnormalities of the spine, or can occur spontaneously due to an underlying heritable disorder of connective tissues, such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or Marfan Syndrome, etc.
